The Big Fella

9781741667103It is always so interesting seeing what is moving, especially before publication date. I am just putting the quintessential Father’s Day list for a special edition of Booktopia Buzz to go out in about 10 days. It is chock full of new releases. I have tried to cover my bases – all sorts of books for all sorts of dads. And the one that we have already got the most pre-orders for? Peter Thompson and Robert Macklin’s dissection of BHP, THE BIG FELLA.

Here’s the link if you want to hop on the bandwagon.

And if you are interested in receiving the Father’s Day Buzz, go to the website and create an account. No strings attached!

Michael Jackson Life of a Legend

Wow things move quickly. Not a week after the passing of Michael Jackson comes the announcement of a full colour 196 page tribute book on this life and times. Put together in record time, this book will be in store by July 31.

Michael Jackson –  Life of a Legend is written by Michael Heatley who has written more than his share of books on rock and pop. This is a glossy pictorial keepsake. It is not a warts and all tell-all. Definitely one for the fans.

First Tuesday Book Club

resized_9780747561620_224_297_FitSquareOoh, I have just noticed that Jeffrey Eugenides‘ very wonderful Middlesex is up for discussion in Jennifer Byrne’s First Tuesday Bookclub in August.

This is a big, sprawling  novel following three generations of a Greek-American family set largely in Detroit. I haven’t read it since it first came out but I will certainly be dusting off my copy now. There are reading group notes available here.

Order your copy of Middlesex here.

9780593057049Also up for discussion next month is Lee Child’s nail-biter, Gone Tomorrow.

Order Gone Tomorrow here.

The Romance Buzz is up

Just a quick note to all you romance readers. Kate’s July romance newsletter  went up on the site today. Here’s a taste….

I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems like the publishers are doing their very best to give readers a little winter warm-up with their covers this month. Don’t believe me? Scroll on down to Gena Showalter’s Seduce the Darkness. Still not convinced? Try Maya Reynold’s Bad Boy. In fact, almost the entire Erotic Romance section this month features some rather spectacularly shaped abs. It almost makes the stories unnecessary… almost.
Lots going on this month in Romancelandia – we wish good luck to all our Aussie authors (and the others, as well, of course) who are travelling to Washington DC for the annual Romance Writers of America Conference. I’ll have the results from the RITAs in August’s Buzz. Fingers crossed at least one of those gold statuettes comes Down Under!

Click here to read it in full. You really should be subscribing.

July new releases – my absolute favourites

I’M just putting the finishing touches on July’s Booktopia Buzz. Here is a heads up on the new books that have stolen my heart. For the rest of them, you’ll have to wait until the newsletter goes up on the site on Tuesday. If you want to get it automatically, you need to create an account. No obligations. Its all free.

Number one

Popular Penguins. Who can resist? Cheap as chips and guaranteed good reads.  How good is that?

The next batch of 50 were released on July 1 so go to the site and start browsing. If you want to read extracts and blurbs, have a play with the widget below.

Number Two

9780330424912The Lost Art of Sleep by Michael McGirr.

Its whimsical, its funny, it back and forth through the centuries and it is all about sleep but it is so fascinating and eccentric that there is no way you can nod off reading it.

Number Three

9781741965476In The Sanctuary of Outcasts by Neil White. Check out my earlier post here.

Actually there are two other books that I loved but I have terrific give aways with them – free art work from the illustrator for one and signed copies flown in from the UK for the other – but I don’t want to spoil the suprise just now. You’ll just have to wait until Tuesday.

Hope you like the orange font! I’ve gone all Popular Penguin this time round.
