Australia’s Favourite Novelist – The Shortlist and Final Vote

Nick Earls’ popularity was undeniable in the Heats

The people have spoken. We are very excited to present the 75 Favourite Australian Novelists, as voted on over the past week.

This is not in order, for the order will only be decided once you cast your final vote. Next week we’ll announce the Top 50 day by day, culminating in the Top 10 being announced on Friday the 25th of January.

A huge thanks must go to all the authors, without your gifts to us there simply wouldn’t be a poll to vote on. Don’t forget, if you see any novelists here you love don’t just vote, get in contact with them to let them know they’re here, and with some noise could be a big player next week when we announce the top 50.

Australia’s only winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, Patrick White.

This poll will be up all week and will close at midday on Sunday. As before, you can vote for as many novelists as you like, but you can only vote once. Unlike the last polls, for the suspense, you won’t be able to see the results immediately. That will all be unveiled next week.

We also had feedback that some people didn’t vote for the big names in the heats, knowing that they’d go through without their vote. Well, this is the time the big names need your vote, this is the big one, the final, and every vote counts towards deciding who is Australia’s Favourite Novelist!

  1. Much as I love so many of these authors, particularly the fantasy writers, for sheer entertainment value, Kerry Greenwood can’t be beaten.

  2. KERRY GREENWOOD!!!!!

  3. Kerry Greenwood is my vote

  4. Mandy Magro gets my vote. I love her novels.

  5. Kate Forsyth is an amazing author – I love her books for both adults & children. What a prolific author & such an imagination as well as sound & extensive research. I hope you do well Kate.

  6. I love Mandy Magro’s books, she’s definitely up there with the beat.

  7. Well done Mandy..

  8. Patrick White is a kind of 20thC. Aussie Dickens. His richness of prose, idiom, setting and character studies ensure White’s works will endure for as long as literature, metaphysics and gritty realism is appreciated.

  9. Love Mandy Magro. What a fabulous aussie author and inspirational person.

  10. I was disappointed Trudi Canavan wasn’t on the list. She’d have definitely received my vote. Kate Forsyth is a very close second though.

  11. Loved Michael Hearle’s book, shared it with the kids’Great new author

  12. There are so many Australian AUthors that I like, very hard to choose, but my favourite is Monica Mc Inernney. I have read all but one og her books, Her books are like sitting listening to an old friend tell a story.

    • I find her a bit too ‘formula’ style and predictable…still don’t mind some of her work.

  13. I’ve read all of Kate Morton’s novels, and love the stories and family history involved. She’s got me back into reading !!

  14. love the warm, easy conversational styole. Kee
    p ‘em coming. xx

  15. I love so many of these authors, it’s almost a shame to vote for only one! Paul Jennings was one of my favourite uni lecturers and he really did tell great stories! I’ve got many of his books and I still love telling the children that I teach that he was my teacher!

  16. So many authors but I am a big fan of Kate Morton

  17. I love Kate Morton’s books. She has such a talent for story telling and her descriptions make you feels as though you are there. You can’t put the book down but then you don’t want to finish it either. Lots of good authors on this list, but I do love Kate’s books.

  18. Such a huge fan of Monica McInerney! Hope she wins.

  19. I have read and reread Dianne’s books they are so easy to read and comprehend.

  20. So glad to see my favourite author Fiona McIntosh is on the list.

  21. Why isn’t Australian author Tony Park on this list? Australia’s best selling fiction writer Nov/Dec 2011!….UNBELIEVABLE!

  22. Thankyou for the list…gives me some new authors to try. Go Australian authors!

    • I’m just starting at the top & reading, or re-reading, these authors…must admit I haven’t tried some before, even though I do go through a fair few books each week:-}

  23. I’d love to get in contact with Patrick White to let him know he’s been nominated, but he’s not picking up the phone… Can’t help but think I’m going to be sadly disappointed when Nikki Gemmell, Morris Gleitzman and Matthew Reilly finish above one of the greatest novelists of the last century.

  24. It’s a great list, ‘ll look forward to the final list.

  25. What a wonderful list….I should start at the top & read my way down…not many that I’m not familiar with though:-} Look forward to the final outcome…..

  26. I cannot for the life of me find the poll on the blog page using my iPad. Where is it?

    • Hi,

I am on an iPad using Safari and the poll is showing up under the picture of Patrick White. Maybe try refreshing or clearing your browser cache. Cheers. Steve.
