Australian Romance Author Showcase with…Bronwyn Parry

As part of Australian Romance Month, Romance Specialist Haylee Nash will be interviewing one Australian Romance author per day. Much like a beauty pageant, each author will be using their charm, wit and grace (and the power of social media) to take home the Booktopia Romance Bestseller crown. Booktopia invites bestselling author of rural romantic suspense Bronwyn Parry to the stage.

1. Describe the perfect date.
A day wandering around rural back roads with my husband; morning tea from the picnic basket, maybe lunch in a country cafe or a country pub, some gentle walking in a National Park – what could be better?

2. Which of your books are you most proud of?
That’s like asking which child a parent loves the most :) I’m proud of all of them – but Dead Heat is an Australian Romance Readers Award winner, and Romance Writers of America RITA and Daphne du Maurier Award finalist, so at the moment I’m very proud of it!

3. What is the hardest thing about being a romance author?
Snide comments from people who haven’t bothered reading the genre – but really, that’s their problem, not mine. They are the ones missing out!

4. What is the best thing about being a romance author?
Finishing a book, and giving characters I’ve spent many months with an optimistic ending. Also, it’s wonderful when readers fall in love with my characters.

5. Who (aside from a significant other) do you swoon over?
Whichever current hero I’m writing! (Oh, and I may have a soft spot for Richard Armitage. And David Tennant. And Clive Owen.)

6. Tell us something very few people know about you.
I started my glittering film career as an extra in the classic Australian film, My Brilliant Career, with Judy Davis and Sam Neill. (I also finished my glittering film career there, too… acting is not my talent.)

7. Describe your writing style in three words.
Character, emotion, landscape.

8. What is your definition of a good book?
One that keeps me in its grip long after I’ve read the last page, so that I have to keep reminding myself I’m here, now, and no longer in the book’s world.

9. Which author would you invite to a dinner party and why?
Shakespeare. He’d probably be the life of the party. (Unless he hid in a corner, muttering and scribbling like a mad writer under deadline.)

10. Finish this sentence: I would do anything for love, but I won’t _____
give up chocolate.

Bronwyn Parry grew up surrounded by books, with a fascination for places, people and their stories. Bronwyn’s first novel, As Darkness Falls, won a prestigious Golden Heart Award from the Romance Writers of America for best romantic suspense manuscript. Her second novel, Dark Country, was named the best romantic suspense of 2009 by the Australian Romance Readers Association and was a finalist in the Romance Writers of America RITA Awards. An occasional academic, Bronwyn’s active interest in fiction and its readership is reflected in her PhD research and she is passionate about the richness, diversity, and value of popular fiction. Bronwyn lives in the New England tablelands and loves to travel in Australia’s wild places.
