Australian Romance Author Showcase with…Christina Brooke

As part of Australian Romance Month, Romance Specialist Haylee Nash will be interviewing one Australian Romance author per day. Much like a beauty pageant, each author will be using their charm, wit and grace (and the power of social media) to take home the Booktopia Romance Bestseller crown. Booktopia invites bestselling historical romance author Christina Brooke to the stage.

1. Describe the perfect date.
As an old married lady, I’d have to say the perfect date is one where someone cooks for me. I think a man who can cook is extremely attractive.

2. Which of your books are you most proud of?
That’s difficult to say because books really are like your children. You are proud of them all for different reasons and in different ways. I can say that I’m proud of my new release London’s Last True Scoundrel because it’s funny and touching and deeply felt.

3. What is the hardest thing about being a romance author?
I think the stereotype in the media and wider public is difficult to fight because it’s perpetuated in almost every article you read about romance. I wish people would be more open-minded. But then I comfort myself with the knowledge that romance readers are among the most enthusiastic and loyal readers out there.

4. What is the best thing about being a romance author?
The wonderful readers I meet, both in person and online, is probably my favourite aspect of writing romance. Some of my readers have tough lives and if my books can help them escape for a few hours to a world where there is a happily ever after, I’m proud to know that.

5. Who (aside from a significant other) do you swoon over?
Henry Cavill. I loved him in The Tudors and I’m looking forward to Superman.

6. Tell us something very few people know about you.
I’m mildly claustrophobic.

7. Describe your writing style in three words.
Witty, sensual, silky.

8. What is your definition of a good book?
A good book’s characters live in my head while I’m not reading it and I remember them and think about them long after I put the book down.

9. Which author would you invite to a dinner party and why?
If Georgette Heyer was still alive I’d invite her because she’s the reason I started writing Regency historicals.

Christina Brooke is a former lawyer who staged a brilliant escape from the corporate world and landed squarely in Regency England. She was the first Australian to win the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart Award for the manuscript which became her first published novel. Christina makes her home in sunny Queensland, Australia with her husband, two boys and one enormous girl dog called Monty. Christina loves to travel, particularly to England for research and to see her dear friends, readers and colleagues in the United States. She also loves walking, window shopping for antiques and enjoying good food, good wine and good times with her friends and family.
