Ten Terrifying Questions
1. To begin with why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself – where were you born? Raised? Schooled?
EMMA: I was born and raised in Melbourne. After finishing high school in Melbourne I completed my naturopathy and science degrees in Sydney.
-I was born in Sydney Australia.
-Raised in South West Suburbs of Sydney.
-Schooled in Catholic schools in South West suburbs of Sydney.
-Trained in commercial cookery and home economics in some of Sydney’s Top Culinary Colleges.
2. What did you want to be when you were 12, 18 and 30? And why?
EMMA: When I was 12 I wanted to be a vet because I loved animals so much, at 18 a travel agent as my Sagittarian love of travel was consuming me and at 30 an author of children’s books as I was a voracious reader as a child./
MICHELLE: I always knew I would have a career in home economics. My best friend and I at primary school would read the food sections of women’s magazines and cookbooks at break times and find recipes to cook. We would talk about http://www.foodphotographer.com.auwhen we were older and what elaborate dinner parties we would put on for our friends and families. When I was 12 I was cooking most of the family meals at home and baking cakes whenever I could. At 18, I was studying commercial cookery in college. At 30, I was the Test Kitchen Manager at Breville Appliances.
• P.S My primary school best friend is now a chef and we are still friends!
3. What strongly held belief did you have at 18 that you do not have now?
MICHELLE: I thought by the age of 30 I would have been married with children and a food editor of a magazine.
4. What were three big events – in the family circle or on the world stage or in your reading life, for example – you can now say, had a great effect on you and influenced you in your career path?
-Moving to the Greek island of Ithaca where the old people inspired me with their absolute zest and vitality. They taught me the importance of food as medicine.
-Having my daughter Sophia, who has taught me patience, love and the pure joy of life itself.
-Filming the TV show Eat Yourself Sexy as it gave me the opportunity to showcase my nutritionist skills to a world-wide audience.
– Event 1 – making cakes and cooking family dinners with my nana Best as a child growing up, she taught me a lot about cooking, she was always the guiding force while other’s were cooking, and often known to have the watchful eye when it came to cooking.
– Event 2 – while running my own successful business as a home economist my grandpa Best told me how proud he was of my achievements. This meant a lot to me and gives me inspiration to keep along this career path.
– Event 3 – famous cooks for example; Julia Child and Margret Fulton. These women are the “guru’s” of teaching people “how to cook” and often I refer to their cookbooks for inspiration.
5. Considering the innumerable electronic media avenues open to you – blogs, online newspapers, TV, radio, etc – why have you chosen to write a book? Aren’t they obsolete?
EMMA: Books are far from obsolete – especially food-related books. To touch, smell and feel a book as you read it is one of life’s simple joys. I chose to write my book so I could share the way food can become medicine and nourish and heal your body and lead to optimal health and wellbeing.
MICHELLE: I hope that hardcopy (paperback) books never become obsolete. I love the smell of books, being able to hold and touch a book and turn the pages is a timeless act. I received my advance copy of this book and was so inspired after reading it that I started cooking and spilt oil on the pages, but I just love these marks on my book, as I know it has been used and it is loved. I decided to write a book to create awareness of women’s health issues and to share my experiences and recipes.
EMMA: The book is co-authored by home economist Michelle Thrift who is excellent at writing beautiful, tasty recipes. I provide the research on 50 everyday ingredients and why they are so incredible for your health. Our book showcases 50 ingredients and will teach women around the world how to nurture their body through food.
MICHELLE: The book is about 50 everyday foods which include recipes that I have developed and naturopath Emma Sutherland explains how they can have positive effects on women’s health issues.

7. If your work could change one thing in this world – what would it be?
EMMA: For every woman to be inspired to nurture her body through nutritious food.
MICHELLE: To live and eat well and reach your highest potential (vitality)!
8. Whom do you most admire and why?
EMMA: My grandmother who is 87 and my role model in every aspect. She is strong, courageous, wickedly cheeky and incredibly loving.
MICHELLE: I admire Professor Thierry Vancaillie of University of New South Wales and Director of Women’s Health and Research Institute of Australia for his level of interest, research and commitment to innovative treatments for women’s health issues.
9. Many people set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?
EMMA: To become a household name in the area of nutrition and women’s health and inspire women to get their Mojo back!
MICHELLE: Global awareness and discussion of women’s health issues and for a world to be educated about the benefits of healthy eating.
10. What advice do you give aspiring writers?
EMMA: Keep your eye on the goal and no matter what, don’t lose sight of the outcome.
MICHELLE: Follow your dreams and never give up, keep going!
