Two weeks ago, thousands of you took to social media to nominate your favourite Australian authors in Booktopia’s annual reader poll. Last week your top nominations faced off in a series of 5 Heats; your top 15 authors from each Heat are now ready to fight it out in this week’s Finals!
Vote in THE FINALS now! Voting is open until Friday, January 20 at 11:59pm (AEDT)
PRIZE: If you leave your name and contact details when voting, you’ll go into the draw to win a $1000 RRP book pack!
This is your last chance to champion your favourites and possibly crown them Australia’s Favourite Australian Author!
The poll closes on Friday, January 20 AT 11:59pm (AEDT). From Monday, January 23, we’ll start counting down your top 50 authors, unveiling 10 authors each day until the announcement of your top 10 favourites on Friday, January 27. To vote, you must enable cookies on your browser.
You may only vote for each author once. However, you may vote for as many authors as you like – we know you have more than one favourite!
How It Works
January 3-8: Nominations
Nominate your favourite Australian authors. You can nominate as many as you like, anyone who you think deserves recognition. Nominate them in 1 of 4 easy ways: Email us at faveozauthor@booktopia.com.au, or tag us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, naming your favourites. Or use the hashtag #ausfaveauthor. The top nominations will make it through to the Heats.
January 9-15: The Heats (on now!)
The top nominations will be collated and split into Heats. Every day this week you’ll have the opportunity to vote for a new list of authors. Only the very best authors from each Heat will progress to the final round of voting.
This is where it gets extra fun! During the Heats, you can go into the running to win a splendid book pack valued at $1000 RRP! – all we need is your email address when you vote!
January 16-20: The Final Poll
The top 75 authors from the Heats will make it to this final poll. This will be your final chance to champion your favourite Australian authors. Voting closes at 11:59pm on Friday, 20th January 2017.
January 23-27: The Countdown Begins
From Monday, 23rd January we’ll countdown your top 50 authors, unveiling 10 authors each day, until…
January 27: The Announcement
Australia’s 10 favourite authors will be announced on Friday, 27th January! We’ll be profiling your top 10 authors and the books that have made them your favourites.

Fill out the form above to vote for your favourite Australian author and you could win a book pack, valued at $1000 RRP!
1. You have from January 9th, 2017 12:00am until 11:59pm January 20th, 2017 to enter.
2. To enter, you must fill out your name, email address and contact phone number, and vote for your favourite Australian author.
3. You can vote in all five heats and in the final poll for a total of 6 entries to the prize.
4. Only entrants with Australian and New Zealand delivery addresses will be eligible to enter the competition.
5. The winner of the competition will be chosen at random and from the list of those who entered.
6. There is one prize available to be won.
7. The winner will be drawn on January 27th, 2017.
8. Entrants must also agree to the terms and conditions on this page.

How can you have a list of favourite authors and leave out Helen Garner? I would also include Geofferey Blayney and Robert Hughes and where is Clive James? I’m not sure about including Clemantine Ford, her only book is a rehash of her newspaper opinion pieces!

I am a huge fan of Tim Winton’s books, I must have bough at least 9 copies of Cloud Street as gifts over the years. Breath is one of my favourites also, Dirt Music is fabulous too!

You have not included my #1 all time favourite Ion Idriess and two others, Rob Mundle and Mike Carlton.
There was a sad article in the Review section of last Saturday’s Australian about Ion Idriess. The whole scenario , to me, smacks of snob values rather than outstanding merit; merit being judged by commercial success of the writer’s books and is a reflection of appeal to the ordinary man. I do not class academics as being in the ilk of “the ordinary” man. I first started reading Ion Idriess books in the 1950’s when I was a teenager. He wrote about 50 books of wjich I have about 30 of them and have read several more than once.

Paul Jennings, a one-time primary school teacher, really has a handle on what the kids like to read! The stories are contemporary and have a dimension of timelessness — and they are always fun for the reader. Our two sons were brought up reading his books, and now their children will be following their footsteps.

What has made Australians such good readers of books? The popular authors recording fact and fiction from our past, before TV and other diversions took over. None of these are on the list. – e.g. Ion Idriess, John Cleary, Xavier Herbert, C.J. Denis, Henry Lawson.

There were a lot of great authors in all areas of topics? I have a passion for reading but more so for Australian authors, who I find intriguing full of knowledge, imagination, and at times fact. We are extremely lucky and fortunate to have such a variety of excellent writers, who can stand in great stead with the rest of the world.

my fave book this year was RISK by Fleur Ferris. which did not get into the last round.
I had no idea most of these authors were Australian. I do like Lianne Morriarty and heard her interviewed on radio last year, I thought she was from o/s.
But my all time author of recent times is Kate Morton. She is a wonderful words smith and story teller. I love Jodi Picoult stories but I would not say she is a brilliant writer of words.
Kate has it all. I was sure she was English. There were many authors I have read and enjoyed their works in the final list, My fave book of modern time is The book Thief. That ticked all the boxes for story telling and use of language and creative writing.
apart from that I am a Jane Austen fan. I love historical fiction.
My friend voted for her all time fave also. but we did not agree on same author.

I love tim Winton. Maybe because I came from wA, and in many cases I identify the places and people he writes about. One special passage he wrote about being in the bush with a friend. Upon coming across an old shed. He wrote “I can hear that shed rusting” .Just think of the image arising in your head, a warm sunny day, the crinkle of dry grass under your feet, maybe a bee or two buzzing around, the smell of a wild honey plant and there the shed, leaning to one side moving in the breeze rusting.

Agree with Henry James (good name) about the disappointing list and interested to read his catalogue of omissions. It included a writer for whom I’d definitely have voted – Peter Temple. I see his novels described as crime novels – a really reductive categorisation because they’re also very fine novels, of interest to non-crime readers like myself, e.g., Broken Shore is one of my favourite Aussie novels, with an astounding sense of place (not surprisingly missing from the ABC dramatisation). Btw, you seem to be using an American spell-checker :/

By definition a list excludes and that is bound to antagonise those people who want to see their own tastes endorsed. Obviously, you can’t please everyone. Am I annoyed that you left Elizabeth Harrower off the list? Yes, deeply, but that’s how it goes. The trouble is your omissions are so vast in number, and so perverse – no Patrick White? No Christina Stead? No Shirley Hazzard? – that the list you have assembled starts to appear woefully haphazard, at best.

You might need to run this competition again to give those authors who were not included a chance to be in a new voting list. The missing names are all much better authors than many of those listed here.

Loved seeing Judy Nunn make the finals. My husband a few years back bought me Pacific for my birthday. Once i start reading her books it is not easy to put them down and always results in a very late night, as i always read in bed. Lol.

Booktopia needs a young writers section. My son attends a creative writing class and the children aged 12-15 years are writing impressive books but have few places for them to be marketed outside of family & friends. It would great if young writers could have a place in bookshops in store and and online so that they can get a representation in the writing world.

Disappointed that Michael Rowbotham didnt get a nomination, always love his books; but still managed to vote for a few of my favourites. Looking forward to the result..

Tim Winton and Shaun Tan are amazing talents from the West. One name missing is Neil Murray. Controversial perhaps but appropriate with Bob Dylan just winning the Nobel. Neil has a unique Australian voice and he has done it all: song, poetry, books and even a play. He deserves a lot more credit than he gets.

This “competition” is the sort you’d have to find “the best Olympian athlete.” There’s just
no telling what bored people will get up to to fill their time between the cradle and the grave.
This one for authors gets my gong for the most inane, insane and stupid – the trifecta. Tom
Keneally will enjoy this one even if he doesn’t win. Bravo Australia. Could do a whole lot better.

Kaz Cook is great because she definitely writes to a target audience; and you are inclined to understand that this is widely appreciated. My choice because I think she does this better than most.

What about Richard Flanagan? Surely you should include him. How many Australian authors have won the Man Booker prize???? Richard did.
