WELCOME to the Booktopia Blog! There is so much going on in the book industry that we just felt we had to share it with you. Our product and editorial teams are constantly keeping up with what’s new and needed an outlet to tell the world, so here it is.
The authors of this blog are:
The Booktopia Book Guru (also known as John Purcell.)
John has been involved in the book industry for twenty years. For ten of those twenty years he ran his own second-hand bookshop where he was able to talk books with book lovers all day long.
A writer and a reader, John hopes to share what he has learned about books with those who will listen and listen to those who are willing to share their knowledge in return.
Recently The Australian Women’s Weekly announced to the world that John had been keeping a secret – click here to discover what that secret was.

Sarah was raised on a steady diet of Enid Blyton and Tamora Pierce, which is perhaps why she has always harboured a secret desire to solve mysteries in the English countryside and/or vanquish evildoers with her mad swordfight-fighting skills.
Sarah loves books of all genres (though she has a particular weakness for classic crime and fairytale re-tellings). Her heroes are Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, Jean Valjean and Atticus Finch. She passionately dislikes sparkling vampires and books with the word “fifty” in the title.
She hopes to one day become the ruler a small country. Or, failing that, the owner of a large tropical island.
Top Five Favourite Books: Persuasion, Jane Eyre, American Gods, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and any given book by P. G. Wodehouse
Andrew is a contributor to The Booktopia Blog and was shortlisted for The Age Short Story Prize. He enjoys reading, writing and sleeping though finds it difficult to do them all at once.
Andrew’s favourite five books: Less Than Zero, A Personal Matter, Portnoy’s Complaint, Blood Meridian and Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed
I have a clear penchant for stories of middle-class disappointment, particularly if they are set in mid-twentieth century suburbia or written by a drunkard in the 1920s. I have been told that my taste in fiction probably warrants a visit to a therapist however I have yet to get around to it. I would probably just be disappointed in the experience.
Unfortunately I am not so taken with the fantasy and sci-fi genres (the only major exception being Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury). However I do have colleagues who are wonderfully well-versed in this area and I look forward to learning more from them.
My five favourite books, for your reference: Tender is the Night – F. Scott Fitzgerald; The Easter Parade – Richard Yates; The Berlin Stories – Christopher Isherwood; Rabbit, Run – John Updike; 1Q84 – Haruki Murakami.
Booktopia Delivers All Over Australia
Booktopia is fast becoming the local bookstore for all Australians.
We ship over 600,000 parcels a year to Australian addresses. Over 750,000 Australian people, businesses, schools, libraries, universities and government departments have placed an order for books, DVDs, CDs, maps, eBooks, calendars and many other products, with Booktopia since our inception in 2004.
Booktopia is an Australian owned and operated business. We have 4,000 square metres of office and warehouse in Sydney where we normally stock around 500,000 books in our Distribution Centre ready to ship.
Over 75% of all books ordered on our site are stocked in our Sydney warehouse. The other 25% are titles we have to order in and we source these items from publishers and suppliers across Australia as well as flying them in from the UK and USA.
In a country this size, if you can genuinely do a good job delivering to rural and regional Australia then you pretty well have the whole of the nation covered.
Here is what some of our rural customers are saying:
“Booktopia has a great range of books for children, it has great prices, competitive postage rates and very speedy delivery. I was pleased to receive my order within 48 hours of lodging it- not just to a capital city but to a rural country town. Keep up the good work Booktopia!” Peg3 (Source: Product Review) http://www.productreview.com.au/r/booktopia/292169.html
“As an avid reader it is one of my greatest pleasures to find a supplier with a superb range, great prices, wonderful service and fast delivery. I have tried other sites and Booktopia you are by far the best. I live in a remote rural area with a very limited supply of good books, so Booktopia is now my favourite place to indulge my passion. Thank you.” taniwha (Source: Product Review) http://www.productreview.com.au/r/booktopia/278765.html
“I ordered online 3 books and within 3 days they were delivered at my doorstep in rural Victoria! The cost of the books are much cheaper than buying in the bookshops and sometimes they books I want are not in stock. I don’t mind paying the extra postage fee as the packaging protected the books well.” Kathy Fitzmaurice (Source: Product Review)
