Grey : Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian by E. L. James (Reviewed by Shikha Shah)

Shikha Shah, Booktopia’s biggest Fifty Shades fan, has been up all night reading E.L. James’ latest offering. The review we’ve all been waiting for is finally here!

Miss Shah will see you now…

greyTo all Fifty Shades Fans – the book that we have been waiting for is finally here!

In Grey we delve into the mind of Christian, what he thinks, how he thinks, how he feels (especially when he is physically touched) and what motivates him.

Let’s face it fans, we all want to know what makes Christian tick.

This is the kind of book that readers will devour as quickly as possible. Even though we already know the story, there is just something about reading it from a different perspective that adds a new dimension, giving us a clearer picture of this divisive character we have come to know so well.

When we read Anastasia’s point of view in the Fifty Shades trilogy, she is painted primarily as a character with low self-esteem. From Christian’s view, however, she is a beautiful and intelligent woman. After their initial meeting all he can do is think about her. It is here that Grey provides us with some real bonus material! We get to read the file that Christian keeps on Anastasia – as well as getting to peek into his mind and finally grasp the true depth of his jealousy and obsession. (Christian gives Edward Cullen some serious competition when it comes to stalking!)

fifty-shades-of-greyReaders are given more details of Christian’s traumatic childhood and how it still tortures him (manifested in his fixation on food and stunted emotional development). We also gain a better understanding of how Elena influenced the sexual lifestyle he is now accustomed to.

Unlike the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, which was self-published, Grey has been professionally edited. While I really enjoyed the trilogy, I have to admit that the writing occasionally seemed a bit weak. Luckily this is not an issue with Grey. The writing is very fluid, which allows the story to flow smoothly.

Basically, this book everything fans of Fifty Shades would want.

Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian

by E. L. James

greySee the world of Fifty Shades of Grey anew through the eyes of Christian Grey.

In Christian’s own words, and through his thoughts, reflections, and dreams, E L James offers a fresh perspective on the love story that has enthralled millions of readers around the world.

Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.

Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

This book is intended for mature audiences.

Four Book Collection

The first four intensely sensual Crossfire novels by bestselling author Sylvia Day.

Bared to You
Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness – beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white hot. I was drawn to him as I’d never been to anything or anyone in my life. The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn’t tear us apart . . .

Reflected in You
Gideon Cross was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn’t stay away. He was my addiction. my every desire. We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession.

Entwined with You
No one knows how much Gideon risked for me. How much I’d been threatened, or just how dark and desperate the shadow of our pasts would become. Entwined by our secrets, we tried to defy the odds. We made our own rules and surrendered completely to the exquisite power of possession . . .

Captivated by You
Gideon calls me his angel, but he’s the miracle in my life. The vows we’d exchanged should have bound us tighter than blood and flesh. Instead they opened up old wounds, exposed pain and insecurities, and lured bitter enemies out of the shadows. We faced a terrible choice: the familiar safety of the lives we’d had before each other or the fight for a future that suddenly seemed an impossible and hopeless dream…

Absolutely Fabulous News!

We’ve all heard the news and now we are SO excited!

Aren’t we?

Well, if you haven’t already heard there may be an Absolutely Fabulous film released this year!

ab_fab_-thumb-300x418I have loved this show for so long, I can’t even remember when I started watching it. My mother always hated it but my grandfather adored it, he saw things my way. I think what we both loved about Absolutely Fabulous was how over-the-top and funny it was, yet it was still a sharp commentary on what happens when you hate the life you’re stuck with and will do anything to make it, well, Absolutely Fabulous!

Who doesn’t love a mother trying to hold onto her youth by trying every single diet ever mentioned, wearing ill-fitting clothes by the hippest designers out there, constantly re-decorating her apartment and trying anything new that comes her way! Let’s be honest, you are only as young as you feel, so I applaud you Eddy!

As for Eddy’s daughter, Saffy, who has to look after her own mother and try as she might to make sure Eddy doesn’t get too carried away, I can relate. Sometimes I feel like the parent when I’m dealing with my mother’s life.

Oh, I must mention Patsy. Eddy’s best friend (at times) who encourages Eddy through all her antics because she herself wants to live and love life forever but can’t do it by herself!

Let’s hope the movie doesn’t disappoint!

Now let’s get down to some of the biggest romance books coming out in 2015. We think they are going to be Absolutely Fabulous, and we think Patsy and Eddy would feel the same way.

5 Choose Your Own Adventure Books You Never Knew Existed

What child’s bookshelf isn’t complete without a collection of Choose Your Own Adventure Books? While the rules could always be bent (finger still on the page means you haven’t chosen yet), they remain one of the best ways to get young kids into books.

But as the craze wore on and more and more titles began to flood the shelves, authors began to take some strange turns with the adventures. Here are some of our favourites.

the-brilliant-dr-woganThe Brilliant Dr. Wogan

by R. A. Montgomery

It takes a hell of a lot of imagination to create a choose your own adventure book. With twists and turns you never see coming, characters that come and go, villains that will take your breath away. One wonders who decided to call the most brilliant mind in the world Dr. Wogan. It’s an odd decision.

You need to save Dr. Diana Wogan, presumably from the ghost of Guy Fawkes by the look of the cover. She has created a machine that will neutralise radiation, putting an end to nuclear war and microwaves until the end of time. You need to save Wogan. Save Wogan!

Who is the shadowy figure? Is he a government official? Is he a terrorist? Is he the CEO of a profitable microwavable pizza company? With 20 possible endings, I’m sure all these questions will be revealed. Answered, no. But revealed, yes.

Track Star!

by R. A. Montgomery

Don’t let that optimistic exclamation mark fool you, Track Star! is a searing tale of right and wrong. This book was actually endorsed by the World Anti-Doping Agency when it was published, so it’s fair to say you probably shouldn’t take that flu jab your coach wants you to take on page 114.

With 12 possible endings, I’m going to go out on a limb and say taking steroids may land you in hot water. Just my thoughts.

Track Star! is another example of the power of the Choose Your Own Adventure series in teaching kids the right thing to do. I had a friend who would always choose to keep the suitcase of money he found, flick to page 213, and be immediately arrested by the police. I won’t say what he’s doing now, but rest assured, he chose his own adventure. He chose his own adventure.

I’m not sure if one of the adventures ends with you in tears on Oprah ten years after retiring, but it’s a twist I like.

The Island of Time

by R. A. Montgomery

The Island of Time.

It doesn’t really make the heart leap out of the chest does it? Perhaps The Island of Thyme would have been worse I suppose, although much better with fish.

You go on a boat. You hit a storm. You go back in time. To The Island of Time. Monty really phoned this one in didn’t he?

I’m guessing Aztecs, sacrifice, all that. The CYOA series loved the Aztecs. The floating shadowy figure also makes another appearance, looking mysteriously like Jafar from Aladdin.

In Choose Your Own Adventure World, as in life, never trust anyone with a goatee.

Prisoner of the Ant People

by R. A. Montgomery

From the outset you’ll notice that the graphics department at CYOA didn’t liaise with the publishers all that much. Granted I’m an amateur zoologist, but I’m pretty sure the cover of Prisoner of the Ant People just shows giant ants, along with a shadowy figure.

Where are these Ant People? Do they have their own planet or is there some sort of Planet of the Apes scenario and Earth is actually Ant Planet now? Have we been breeding with the ants to make Ant People? I have my questions about how that works logistically.

Prisoner of the Ant People contains 28 possible endings, which is about as many as the series usually gives you. With 28 endings, I’m confident that one of your adventures could land you as King of the Ant People. I’m extremely okay with that. They’re great workers, and a stable agrarian based economy is essential for both Homo sapiens and Hymenoptera to live in perfect harmony.
