Meet Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. If you haven’t already heard of these two incredible ladies, you’ll thank us for introducing you to their adventure-filled stories. Amie and Meagan have been friends a long time and are both authors in their own right. So it stands to reason that they would eventually come to the conclusion to write books together.
Their first series, The Starbound Trilogy, was described as ‘Titanic in space’. What followed was a gripping series that drew more and more fans to their undeniable orbit. Now, dedicated fans have been waiting (im)patiently for their next series which has been described as ‘Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft – in space!’… need we say more? Luckily, Unearthed did not disappoint and fans are eagerly awaiting the second instalment in this new duology.
Unearthed sees protagonists Jules Addison and Amelia Radcliffe joining forces in a tomb-raiding race on a newly-discovered planet to unravel the secrets of an ancient, long-extinct civilisation – only to uncover a revelation that could spell the end of the human race. In the beginning, Amie and Meagan’s protagonists don’t see eye-to-eye.
“I think the reason we always do the two different worlds thing is because we’re actually quite different,” says Meagan. “We’re such good friends, we have so many similar interests but who we are are very complimentary personalities. I think we tend towards these stories about these friendships and relationships between people who are totally different from each other because that’s interesting, there are tensions there.”
The inspiration for Unearthed came to the NYT-bestselling duo one night in a hotel room while they were on tour. Indiana Jones was on the tellie and that got them talking about why no one wrote those kinds of epic adventures for the YA-reader community. Then it hit them: wait a minute, WE write Young Adult! The rest is history. Personally, we’re very glad they opted to stay in and watch TV that night.
“It just came out so easily because it’s right up our alley.” – Amie and Meagan
Of course, they put their trademark sci-fi twist to the series. Solving puzzles and outrunning your enemies is way more entertaining when on an alien planet! The puzzles will keep readers on their toes (much like the characters!) and will reward the re-reader. So if you’ve already read it, go back for round two and look a little deeper during those tricksome little puzzles.
“We wanted to put a lot of notes into the puzzles that would reward the re-reader.” – Amie
So, what are you waiting for? Get on board and join in the wild ride that is Unearthed.
Onward, if you dare!
