      Hi Jim,

Peter Carey was in one of the Heats last week but didn’t make it through to the finals based on the votes from the public.

      January 23, 2018 at 8:32 am

      Hi Stuart,

This list of 76 is based on votes from the public in our Heats last week. The top 15 of each Heat went into the Finals round, with one additional author from the Wild Card Heat. Unfortunately Nan Chauncy hasn’t made it to this round of the poll.

      Kind regards,

Just curious, did Hannah Peach /Sienna Blake (YA/Romance Author) make it into any of the heats? She learnt her craft mainly from having Bryce Courtney as her mentor.

          January 25, 2018 at 2:16 pm

          Hi Rebecca,

I’ve had a look and no, neither of them made it into the Heats. If you’re curious about any other authors who made it into the Heats, each Heat has a full list of authors who were included.

          Thanks,

Booktopia, I’ve two favourite authors, one being Bryce Courtenay and the other myself! Bryce I knew personally which is one reason. He was a lovely man. Secondly his book Power of One was of help to a relative who was having a bit of a struggle. Thirdly, I helped him with Four Fires. My signed copy is presently with our local volunteer bushfire brigade to auction to raise funds for a fire station that floods every Wet Season. As for myself, let me just include the words of Jonathan Franzen in regard to my autobiography, Quiet Snake Dreaming. He wrote that this book gave him ‘huge insight’ into the lives of Aboriginal Australians. My ‘Birds of Australia’s Top End’ won high praise from birdwatchers around the world and ‘Fauna of Kakadu and the Top End’ was a core text for American students at the University of NSW summer school for fourteen years.

Hi! You can vote for as many authors as you’d like! But you can only vote ONCE – meaning, when you vote: select as many as you want before closing your browser. If you come back to vote for more, it won’t let you.
      Thanks,

I may have missed the name in the initial list, but I haven’t seen one of the most interesting and erudite authors, mentioned in any of the lists, and that is Don Watson.
This surprised me and disappointed that the Australian reading public prefers fiction to non-fiction, factual, literary gems such as The Bush, and Recollections of a Bleeding Heart.

      January 23, 2018 at 8:36 am

      Hi Eve,

Don Watson was one of the authors you could vote for in Heat 1. Unfortunately he didn’t make it into the top 15 from that Heat that progressed to the Finals round based on the public’s votes.

    • Tanaya Lowden

      January 25, 2018 at 2:17 pm

      Hi Carol,

This is the Finals round of the poll. The top 15 authors from each of the 5 Heats we ran over the last two weeks make up the Finals poll. Unfortunately Kylie Quillinan, Gabrielle Lord and Jennifer Rowe did not make it into the Heats. As for Henry Lawson and Elizabeth Jolley, both were in Heat 4 but did not manage to make it into the top 15 to progess to the Finals round.

      Thanks,

    • Tanaya Lowden

      January 25, 2018 at 11:19 am

      Hi there,

A cookie is a small piece of data used on websites to track a specific thing. In the case of our author poll, the cookie is tracking whether someone has already voted to ensure that only one vote per person is recorded. The way the poll has been set up means that cookies must be enabled in order to participate, and so we can keep the poll fair and not have people voting multiple times.

      Hope this helps.

      Kind regards,
      Tanaya

We are aware that Ruth Park is New Zealand born. Our Favourite Australian Author poll included Australian-born authors and also those who now call Australia home.

      Hi Angela,

Both Peter Temple and Garry Disher were nominated for the Heats. They both appeared in Heat 1 but unfortunately did not make the top 15 of their Heat to make it into this Final round.

      January 25, 2018 at 2:25 pm

      Hi Margaret,

Henry Lawson was in Heat 4 of the poll, but unfortunately did not make it into the top 15 of that Heat to progress to the Finals round. As for the other authors you asked about, none of these made it into the Heats, and therefore could not be in the Finals either based off of nominations and votes from the public.

      Thanks,

    • Tanaya Lowden

      January 25, 2018 at 2:21 pm

      Hi Pete,

This is our Finals round. Over two weeks we ran 5 Heats with the top 15 from each making it into this round. Peter Carey was in Heat 4, but unfortunately did not make it into the top 15 to progress to the finals round. All this has been decided based on votes from the public.

      Hi Joy,

The Favourite Australian Author poll is completely decided by votes from the public. After nominations and several rounds of Heats, these 76 authors in the Finals round have had the highest number of votes. Unfortuantely Ian Heads hasn’t made it to this stage of the poll.

      Thanks,
